Fair Oaks Farm --the Day After!

The morning after the wedding,
the Henrichs, Ashes and Krogh headed to
a very unique place… Fair Oaks Farm!

Lots and lots of COW and PIGS!!

These little ones are kept here after weaning

and once they are born…
their Mamas can start producing milk for others!

And here are the Mamas on their way to the milking barn! I think it is called the  "Milky Way".
Cow barns that hold hundreds of cows!

Passing by on the bus…..

And once they are in the milk barn they get hooked up
and the milking begins!
The Milky-Go-Round!

Check out the number of cows getting ready to come into the Milk in the Round!  As one came on.. one backed off. They all seemed to know exactly what to do.

"Don't you wish they'd stop watching us?"
"Not a chance, honey!"

Katherine didn't know what to think of all the cows….
but the rest of us were in awe.

This is the bus that drove us around for the tours…  They told us that near the birthing barn there was a traffic light.  If it was Red.. no calf was ready to be born.. if Yellow..one was on the way. and if Green, RUN to the barn to see the baby born!

It was RED so we decided to go have lunch and
lots and lots of chocolate milk!  DELICIOUS!

Everyone was happy with the milk
and with being together.

Katherine was hiding behind her milk but her mommy
was happy to smile for the camera.

Festive Fall looks are big in October on the farm
and even in the city!  Note: how flat the horizon is!

The Pumpkin Patch and the BIG sky!

Check the traffic light!

IT'S GREEN… RUSH to the Birthing Barn!!

And this is what we found!  One baby had just been born..( right)
And the 2nd was just emerging! (on the left)

After a few tugs from the assistants…

The baby comes sliding out!

and out….

And Mama says. "Thank you…. glad that's over!"
Then we look back at the first birth and suddenly
the mama stands up!

Her tail raises and then….

her second baby comes out from mid-air!

So we got to see three new babies!
Funny how both mamas are cleaning the first baby born.

Then attention to number 2!
and back to baby #1 with #2 right
under her back feet.
Baby starts to stand up but didn't make it while we were there.

This was an amazing arena made to allow everyone to see the birth of little baby calves!  Or is it calfs?
Right next door was the nursery!

Then we headed back to all the activities outside!

Even a cow to pose on!  ( can you see it under there)
Great fall scene!

Even cows needs a good Milkshake once in a while!

After the cows…. we headed to the pig tour!

Lots of new babies here….

How do these mama do it… with so many little ones?
They are transferred to bigger pens before long.
This littlest one was the newest born that day.. or that hour!
They grow up fast!!!
This was a fake pig that kids could do a sonogram on…   Katherine is rubbing the wand and Brian is looking at all the little pigs in the picture!

This is the heart of America and the flag waving speaks to that…  We all learned a lot today about cows and pigs and
we had some time to catch up with each other!

Thanks, Nelda… for encouraging us to
visit Fair Oaks Farm.
This was an
"Utterly Fantastic"day in the Midwest!

love,
margie
