Guests and Gusts and Construction...

The Clinton Health Initiative
has sent about 60 nurses and doctors and their families here  from the States.  They are coming as teaching staff from Harvard, Yale, John Hopkins, etc. to educate the medical staffs in Rwanda on better medical practices.

A couple families had joined us for church and we had them over for lunch a couple weeks ago. This is Brandi, Jeff and Garrett. They are from Eureka, Ill not far from where I grew up.
This is Vickie and Sarah and John.
Right now I can't remember where they are from.  Oh, my mind!
I think the DC area/ Maryland,
but these are some great folks that have come to Kigali!
Vickie, Sarah and Jeff are the nurses.
We had a fun time with them and i hope we can do it again.
They've only been here a couple of months.
We had a great time talking and listening to their stories.  It was
fun to get to know them.. Now we see each other everywhere-
all over town.

Storms are on the rise here and this was a sort of strange one.
As it was pouring down rain and as the storm continued to roll in,
the sun kept shining through one spot in the sky.

It just didn't want to give up!!  Much more beautiful than this picture can portray.
But it was a bit eerie!
And then during the week there was this sight at this construction site!
This building is going up right across the street from Bruce's office.
And today.. the cement was going up to the 3rd floor.
First there is the long line at the bottom of all the guys waiting to get a bucket of concrete.
Look at the guys going up and down the scaffolding ramp?  They each have large buckets
of concrete on their heads.  Now if you look at the building you can come to appreciate just
how all the building are built here.  All the concrete you see on this building was done
by this process.

A close up!  Look at the column next to the guys how smooth it is.
These guys must be quite strong.

Up on the top... pouring the concrete into the hand made forms. It is truly amazing how
all of the building here are designed and built.  Some, of course, are better built than
others. If you look at the first picture and then at this one....

you can see that this is a picture of the guys on the top floor off to the right a bit.

I'm not taking as many pictures each day because things are starting to get familiar.
But everyday there are sights like this- that make me stop
and realize that life is different here.
And it is much harder for most folks.

We had a dining room chair leg break so we took it to the mill to get fixed.

Innocent is explaining that it has to be done right
but most of them are saying this cannot be repaired!
With the amount of tools and knowing this chair came from Dubai,
I didn't think it could be fixed either.

The crowd began to grow.... everyone was working
on the problem.... The whole leg must be remade
and then figure out how to make it fit back into the
design of the chair.  "Come back in 3 days."

As we were leaving the mill we had to turn around and when
we did it took us to this location.  You can see the roof tops to the top left... of the picture below.
This area is really being built up!!!  There were 100's of little shops primarily hardware and equipment kind of places before...but all is changing.

This was the old market area.... They started building this
around June?  And look at it now.  They look like apartment
buildings but they will really be  "indoor" markets with lots of shops.
It hasn't opened yet but will soon.
You can see all the construction going on here, too.
Well, first the demolition
!  This whole area had been little shops
that weren't in very good condition.

Kigali is on the move!  Look out!!

                                  Oh.. by the way...

They figured it out.  The entire leg had to be
remade..... Can you tell which one?
The whole leg redone, designed and put back
                             together all for $8.00!

So in the middle of guests, gusts and construction... we find ingenuity!

And that is not uncommon here!

Love,
margie

ps.  It's the one on the left!
